Today in Worship - Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany
Preacher & Worship Leader: Pastor Darwin Karsten
Children's Message: Lauren Bates
Elder: Mike Gates

Remembering Whose We Are
Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.

Opening Prayer

Confession of Sin & Assurance of Forgiveness
Pastor:  Children of God:  Let us ask our Father to forgive us our sins, because Jesus Christ is our Lord, who has died and risen again for us.
ALL:  Lord God, our Heavenly Father, we confess to You that we are sinful.  And we have sinned against You in many ways, in our thoughts and in our words, in what we have done, and in what we have failed to do.  Have mercy on us and forgive us.  Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, Lord, help us to obey You, keep us from evil, and bring us to eternal life.  We ask this through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.
Pastor:  God has had mercy on us, He loves us, and has given His Son to die for us.  So, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, I assure you all your sins are forgiven, In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Go in peace and serve the Lord!
ALL:  Amen.  Help us to live and speak our thankfulness!

First Reading
Mark 1:35-39
35  Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
36  Simon and his companions went to look for him,
37  and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!"
38  Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come."
39  So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

Sermon Scripture Reading
I Corinthians 9:19-27
19  Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.
20  To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.
21  To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law.
22  To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.
23  I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
24  Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.
25  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
26  Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.
27  No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

  • Becoming a Servant of Jesus Because He Became a Servant For Us!
    • Galatians 2:20 - I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

  • Becoming a Servant of Other People!
    • I Corinthians 10:32-33 -  Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

  • All of this for One Purpose that People Might Believe and Be Saved!
    • I Timothy 2:1-4 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

  • Going into Training to Share and Live the Love of Jesus!
    • II Timothy 4:7-8 - I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

"The Lord's Prayer"

In Whom Do We Believe? The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.  He descended into hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.  From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Prayers Of The Day

The Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever.  Amen.
